In 2024, the global electric vehicle (EV) market experienced significant growth, with nearly 14 million new electric cars registered, marking a 35% increase from the previous year. This surge elevated the total number of electric cars on the road to 40 million.

Within this, China solidified its position as the largest EV market, accounting for approximately 40% of new car sales. This dominance is attributed to substantial government subsidies and a well-established manufacturing ecosystem. In contrast, Europe saw EVs comprising about 20% of new car sales. Meanwhile, the United States observed EVs making up nearly 10% of new car sales.

Clearly, the global EV market is not uniform. Various regions exhibit distinct adoption rates and consumer behaviors. In Europe and the U.S., consumers often prioritize price, quality, and performance, with a notable interest in connected vehicle features. Developing markets, however, show a higher willingness to pay for advanced technologies and display greater interest in vehicle subscription models over traditional ownership.

Regardless of the region, the global EV market is positioned for more growth, with projections indicating that EVs will account for over one-fifth of global car sales in 2024.  Over 20 major car manufacturers, equivalent to more than 90% of 2023’s global car sales, have set electrification targets. This trend is only expected to continue.

Recently, CleanTechnica released their report on the world’s top-selling EV models and brands. Read on to learn about the top-selling EV brands globally in the past year.
