Electric vehicles have been ticking off inflection points left and right—from cost and sales of new EVs to the price of used EVs. Now we can add another one to the list: hybrids and battery-electric vehicles edged out internal combustion engine cars to account for the majority of Consumer Reports' "Top Picks" for 2023.

Seven out of 10 of the top picks for new cars from venerable consumer advocacy nonprofit were BEVs and hybrids (or at least models that come in one of those options)—up from four in 2022, four in 2021, and three in 2020. Consumer Reports, which publishes products ratings and reviews on its website and in its magazine, releases its list of top picks for new cars each year based on factors including affordability, reliability, safety, owner satisfaction, and road-test performance.
