As the world transitions toward renewable energy and electric vehicles, batteries have become an increasingly vital technology. However, the growing demand for batteries also presents a significant environmental challenge: what to do with them once they reach the end of their useful life. To this end, battery recycling is an ideal solution.

Batteries contain valuable metals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, which can be reclaimed and reused. Battery recycling, therefore helps create a circular economy where materials in use stay in use, and further mining and material extraction is not necessary. Recycling also helps prevent toxic materials from contaminating soil and water if batteries are improperly disposed of in landfills.

Despite its clear benefits, battery recycling faces several significant hurdles. One major challenge is the lack of standardization in battery design and chemistry, which complicates the recycling process. Additionally, the current recycling infrastructure is insufficient to handle the projected influx of spent batteries in the coming decades, particularly from electric vehicles. Economic factors also play a role, as the cost of recycling must be balanced against the value of recovered materials.

Fortunately, there are a myriad of companies and organizations looking to to tackle these challenges. In this piece, we’ll take a look at some of the most promising startups in the battery recycling world to learn more about their unique approaches. Read on to learn about seven startups that are reimaging battery recycling.
