The use of AI to speed battery design has been a hot topic for a long time, with multiple sessions dedicated to the challenge at The Battery Show Europe last month. Now, LG Energy Solution has announced a breakthrough.

On July 14, the Korean battery developer announced the development of its "Optimal Cell Design AI Recommendation Model," a groundbreaking AI solution that reduces the battery cell design period from two weeks to just one day to Korean media outlets.

As reported by BusinessKorea and The Korea Herald, the innovative model leverages generative AI techniques to generate battery cell designs based on specific client requirements, utilizing data from approximately 100,000 design cases.

Streamlining the need for multiple iterations

The AI model ensures optimal battery cell composition, meeting crucial performance factors such as capacity, energy density, and resistance. Traditionally, incorporating client demands required multiple iterations and performance predictions, but the new AI solution streamlines this process, completing it within a single day, including verification, according to BusinessKorea reporting.

A representative from LG Energy Solution emphasized that the model maintains consistent design quality and speed, regardless of the designer's experience, leading to significant cost savings and enhanced operational efficiency.

Lee Jin-gyu, Chief Digital Officer at LG Energy Solution, is quoted by both reports as stating, "By integrating AI technology into the critical battery cell design process, we aim to provide overwhelming product competitiveness and differentiated customer value."

Currently in the trial phase, the AI model is anticipated to be incorporated into LG Energy Solution's in-house cell development system by October this year. The company also plans to extend the application of this AI technology to battery module and pack design in the future.
