In 2024, collaborations across the electric mobility ecosystem are accelerating the transition to a sustainable future. From large-scale battery plants in Europe to advancements in autonomous electric vehicle (EV) technology and grid-stabilizing innovations, these partnerships address critical challenges and create new opportunities. However, geopolitical developments are adding complexity to this rapidly evolving industry.

Recently, the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) added Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), the world’s largest EV battery manufacturer, to its blacklist, citing national security concerns. This move could have far-reaching consequences for Tesla and Ford, two of the most prominent US automakers collaborating with CATL. Tesla leverages CATL’s LFP battery technology for its lower-cost EV models, while Ford has partnered with the company to build a lithium-iron-phosphate battery plant in Michigan. The designation raises questions about the future of these partnerships and the potential ripple effects on US EV production, especially as regulatory scrutiny increases.

CATL, in a statement, refuted the designation, emphasizing that “CATL has never engaged in any military-related business or activities.” The company noted that the designation does not prevent business with non-Department of Defense entities. It pledged to engage with the US government to correct a false claim, including—if necessary—pursuing legal action.
