Ample, a developer of battery-swapping technology for electric vehicles (EVs), has announced a $25 million investment from Mitsubishi Corporation. This collaboration extends beyond financial support, leveraging Mitsubishi’s expertise in renewable energy, battery reuse, and mobility to enhance Ample’s battery-swapping infrastructure and accelerate sustainable energy solutions.

This partnership builds on Ample’s ongoing collaboration with Mitsubishi Fuso to revolutionize battery-swapping for electric trucks. Together, they aim to deploy Ample’s second-generation modular battery-swapping technology, which allows light-duty trucks like the FUSO eCanter to swap depleted batteries for fully charged ones in just five minutes. This approach ensures fleet uptime and reduces operators' costs by eliminating upfront battery expenses.

The significance of OEM backing

When an OEM like Mitsubishi backs battery-swapping technology, it validates the solution as a practical and scalable option for addressing key EV adoption challenges like charging times and infrastructure costs. This support ensures seamless integration with vehicle designs, accelerates market deployment through Mitsubishi’s global reach, and enhances consumer and stakeholder credibility. Additionally, the collaboration fosters innovation in the technology and strengthens its position as a complementary solution to traditional charging methods, especially for fleet operations and urban mobility, while aligning with broader sustainability goals.

The future of EV battery swapping is poised for significant growth as it addresses critical challenges like charging speed, cost, and infrastructure scalability. By enabling fast, efficient, and affordable energy solutions, battery swapping is becoming a cornerstone for accelerating EV adoption, particularly in fleet and urban applications. As partnerships with industry leaders like Mitsubishi continue to validate and expand this technology, battery swapping has the potential to complement traditional charging networks and drive the global shift toward sustainable, carbon-neutral transportation.

"We are thrilled to have Mitsubishi Corporation join us on our mission to make electric vehicle adoption more accessible and sustainable," stated Khaled Hassounah, Ample's CEO. "Their investment and industry knowledge will be invaluable as we continue to scale our battery-swapping infrastructure and advance our technology."
