Silicon anodes have long been regarded as an innovative technology in the evolution of lithium-ion batteries. Their ability to significantly enhance energy density, extend battery life, and improve overall performance positions them as a key solution for industries like electric vehicles (EVs) and portable electronics. However, challenges such as high costs, stability issues, and supply chain vulnerabilities have hindered widespread adoption.

Now, NanoGraf has introduced Onyx, which they claim has a high-performance, EV-ready silicon anode material designed to overcome these obstacles. Manufactured in the company’s Chicago facility, Onyx delivers a 30% improvement in energy density over synthetic graphite anodes, enabling EVs to gain up to 30% more range and extending runtime for portable devices, according to the company.

NanoGraf CEO Francis Wang highlighted the breakthrough, stating, "With Onyx, NanoGraf has addressed the barriers of cost, stability, and supply chain resilience, making silicon anode technology as ready for manufacturing as graphite." The company also claims that Onyx features a metal-doped silicon oxide core that reduces swelling by 75%, improving battery life and performance.

In addition, NanoGraf announced that it has eliminated silane gas from its production process, offering a more sustainable and cost-effective solution. As the company expands production to its new Flint, Michigan plant, Onyx is set to transform EV manufacturing and other markets like military and medical devices.

Strengthening the domestic supply chain

The introduction of Onyx represents a breakthrough in battery performance and a step toward a more reliable and resilient domestic supply chain. Manufactured at NanoGraf’s Chicago production facility, Onyx ensures that EV manufacturers, military and consumer electronics companies can rely on a steady, local source of high-quality anode materials. This focus on domestic production reduces supply chain vulnerabilities, supporting the growing demand for advanced battery technologies while strengthening the overall battery manufacturing ecosystem in the US.
