Ultium Cells Milestone Solidifies US Leadership in Cleantech
Ultium Cells produces its 100 millionth battery cell at the Warren plant, marking a key milestone in U.S. clean energy and battery technology.
So much has happened since GM's battery cell joint venture Ultium Cells LLC started production at its new battery cell factory in Warren, OH. The 100 millionth battery cell production by Ultium Cells at its Ohio facility proves the US’ growing leadership in cleantech. This milestone underscores the strategic importance of battery technology in driving economic growth, advancing sustainability, and achieving energy independence.
The Warren facility of Ultium Cells—a joint venture between General Motors (GM) and LG Energy Solution—employs 2,200 workers and occupies 2.8 million sq. ft, which is equivalent to the size of 30 US football fields, supplies battery cells to various GM EV assembly plants throughout North America. The plant produces advanced nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum (NCMA) pouch-type battery cells that power GM’s expanding electric vehicle (EV) lineup. This battery chemistry delivers greater range and affordability, accelerating the adoption of EVs across the nation.
“The work being done here at Ultium Cells Warren is critical to the future of transportation and to General Motors’ efforts to drive the industry forward,” stated JP Clausen, GM’s executive vice president of Global Manufacturing and Sustainability.
David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution, highlighted the significance of this achievement: “As the largest battery cell manufacturer operating in North America, this milestone at our Ultium Cells joint venture with GM represents our commitment to scaling zero emissions power across a variety of industries, from EVs to Energy Storage Solutions. We’re committed to electrifying more energy sources and to creating jobs in the state of Ohio.”
Kurt Kelty, VP, Battery Cell and Pack at GM, added his thoughts on LinkedIn:
Beyond EVs, the implications of Ultium Cells’ production reach into energy storage, a cornerstone of modernizing the electric grid and integrating renewable energy sources like wind and solar. This positions the US as a global leader in transportation and broader energy solutions that enhance grid reliability and resilience. As one of North America's largest battery cell manufacturers, Ultium Cells is advancing battery innovation. At the same time, the US continues to drive the energy transition, reinforcing its global leadership in sustainability and technological progress.
