Hyundai Motor Company and General Motors (GM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore strategic collaboration, aiming to revolutionize vehicle development and clean energy technologies. This landmark agreement brings together two automotive giants to co-develop passenger and commercial vehicles, as well as electric and hydrogen-powered technologies, with a shared goal of advancing sustainable transportation.

The collaboration will enable both companies to leverage their combined strengths to enhance vehicle production efficiencies, reduce costs, and bring cutting-edge technologies to market faster. By exploring combined sourcing of battery raw materials and steel, Hyundai and GM aim to strengthen their supply chains, a critical move as demand for electric vehicles (EVs) continues to surge globally.

Tackling the complexities of securing critical components like lithium, nickel, and cobalt is pivotal for advancing battery technology. These essential components are not only in high demand but are also concentrated in a few key regions, creating vulnerabilities in the supply chain. For instance, according to Statista, Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is the world's largest producer of cobalt from mines, accounting for over 70 percent of global cobalt mine production in 2023, while much of the lithium refining occurs in China. As EV demand surges, Hyundai and GM's decision to explore combined sourcing aims to address these challenges by securing stable, sustainable supplies and reducing costs amid rising material prices.

This strategic alignment between these companies underscores the growing necessity for innovative approaches to material sourcing as both companies embark on a broader partnership to drive advancements in vehicle development and sustainable technologies. This partnership also highlights the growing importance of collaboration in the automotive industry, especially in clean energy. Hyundai’s Executive Chair, Euisun Chung, emphasized the potential of this alliance to foster technological innovation. "This partnership will enable Hyundai Motor and GM to evaluate opportunities to enhance competitiveness in key markets and vehicle segments, as well as drive cost efficiencies and provide stronger customer value through our combined expertise and innovative technologies," he said.
