What’s old is new again. It turns out that battery-powered vehicles were on the scene before those powered by gasoline.

As electric vehicles (EVs) grow in popularity, it’s occasionally helpful to remind ourselves where they came from and how they got here. EVs were popular at the very dawn of the automobile and remained so until gasoline cars finally took over. A hundred years passed before general interest in electrification would be renewed. Even then there would be a few false starts on the road to growing acceptance.

As much as anything, the long timeline of the EV is related to battery technology and the innovations in electrical energy storage that are finally making electrification a real possibility.

At Battery Technology, we think it is important that we remember what came before so that we might be able to avoid the pitfalls. We have written about the history of specific EVs before—this time we’ll look at different time periods and how they significantly altered the path of EV development. Let’s have a look at how we got here, where we are, and where we all will be going. The future is sooner than you think!
