The kerosene lamp and stove remain a part of many people’s camping equipment— for many campers, those are as important to pack as the ingredients for the s’mores. The appeal of camping can be in how it removes the barriers between us and nature, immersing us in its sights, sounds, and air. The camper carries all she needs on her back: a light tent, a sleeping bag, clothing for warmth, and of course food and the tools to prepare it.

Technology has improved a lot of these things: Tents are much lighter and easier to set up; there are varieties of easy-to-prepare foods that would amaze your grandparents, and sleeping bags are warmer and lighter. Everything is designed to make it faster and easier for you to set up a campsite and start enjoying your surroundings.

That’s one kind of camping. But there are other campers who, while they love nature, still appreciate the benefits of civilization—such as modern, electric technology.

For these campers, there are now options that can considerably smooth the edges of “roughing it” out on the road or trail: Some add the comforts of home--others ensure you can find your way home.

Here are seven battery-powered portable devices that wouldn’t seem out of place on a camping trip with Mr. Spock or Judy Jetson.
