Redwood Materials is perhaps the best-known battery recycling startup, thanks in part to co-founder JB Straubel—a marquee name from his 15-year tenure as chief technology officer at Tesla. The Carson City, NV-based company believes that "the largest lithium and cobalt mines in the western hemisphere can be found in our country’s junk drawers," and it is aiming to leverage them. Redwood Materials claims to receive around 6 GWh of batteries each year, from which the company reclaims anode and cathode materials. It aims to produce enough materials to power a million electric vehicles a year by 2025. High-profile partnerships are rolling in. After announcing it would help recycle batteries as well as provide a US-based supply chain for battery materials to Ford last year, Redwood recently inked deals with Volkswagen and Toyota.
