The open-circuit-voltage (OCV) is a key element in electric models of lithium-ion batteries and describes the thermodynamic voltage at equilibrium. It refers to the voltage of the battery when it is not connected to a load or a charging device. As battery materials age based on external stress factors, the OCV changes over lifetime, but is often neglected in battery modeling, resulting in challenges regarding accuracy of battery models over battery lifetime. Read this article to learn why this is so important to EV design, particularly for calibrating the State of Charge estimation, and how the TWAICE battery model enables engineers to consider OCV aging for battery models.
