Where Will We Build Them? EV Plants in North America

With more electric vehicles (EVs) coming online, carmakers are spending billions to upgrade old factories or build brand new ones to meet anticipated demand.

Electrification is finally beginning to change the automotive landscape in the US and manufacturers—both legacy makers and startups—are looking for the best place to build their EVs.

Building in the US has its advantages, particularly as Federal tax incentives to buy an electric will likely be greater if the vehicle is built here. There may be additional incentives if the EV is made using union labor.

There seem to be two schools of thought: you can either take over an existing auto plant that has been shuttered by a traditional maker and reopen it as an EV plant, or you can start from a green field and build up a new plant from scratch. Both approaches are evident in the move toward US electrification.

We looked at 13 car companies that are building production facilities or that have announced new factories to build EVs. They range from traditional carmakers like Ford and General Motors to startups like Lucid and Canoo. We will start with the most valuable carmaker in the world: Tesla.
