Tesla has a record first quarter in 2022 and could build 1.2 to 1.4 million EVs this year.

In 2021, Tesla delivered 936,222 electric vehicles (EVs) with 308,600 delivered in the fourth quarter of that year. The first quarter of 2022 has beaten that mark with 305,407 EVs built and 310,048 delivered. Now, with Gigafactories turning out Teslas in Fremont, California, Shanghai, China, Austin Texas, and newly opened Berlin, it is estimated that the EV-only carmaker will produce between 1.2 and 1.4 million vehicles in 2022.

Here is what the 2022 first quarter looked like:

Production

Deliveries

Model S/X

14,218

14,724

Model 3/Y

291,189

295,324

Total

305,407

310,048

After a slow start, EVs from traditional makers like Ford, GM, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi, and BMW are finally reaching the market and this will affect Tesla sales. In 2020, Tesla sold 79.5 percent of all EVs in America. Last year, with increasing competition and EV choices that number was down to 66.3 percent. Tesla is still the 300-pound gorilla in the room, but even as its sales numbers increase, as the EV market size grows, its share of the market will steadily erode.
