Once upon a time, the sports car was considered the pinnacle of automotive enthusiasm and performance. Usually, with just two seats and sacrificing some levels of practicality for pure acceleration, handling, and exhilaration, the sports car was the vehicle that many aspired to.

Times have changed. Massive luxury sport utility vehicles (SUVs) are the focus and even former sports car specialists like Bentley, Ferrari, Porsche, and Jaguar are a part of the SUV bandwagon. As the world is moving to electrification, there seems to be a luxury SUV electric vehicle (EV) on everyone’s drawing board, including even an SUV for Corvette by 2025.

Still, there are a few EV sports cars that are finding their way out of the light truck morass. In many ways, electrification and sports cars are a natural. Aside from the relatively heavy battery packs that must be accommodated, electric motors that can produce prodigious amounts of horsepower and torque are small and relatively easy to package, making all-wheel-drive (AWD) a straightforward undertaking. EV designers throw around numbers like 1,000-horsepower without a second thought—the number of gasoline-powered cars that have ever come close to that magic number can be counted on one hand.

Here are 9 all-electric sports cars that will soon be coming to market. Some will be here soon, others are a bit further out, but all of them hold out hope that at least some of us won’t be riding around in overweight, oversized behemoths.
