A battery’s performance is only as good as the joint between the cell and the tab. Whether you use laser welding, resistance welding, MicroTIG welding, or ultrasonic wedge bonding, the critical factor in determining the quality of that joint is the cleanliness of the parts.
Surface contaminants such as grease, oil, corrosion inhibiting agents, and other compounds typically used in manufacturing can be found on battery components. This results in poor fusion, cracks, and porosity in the joints. The solution: Clean the surfaces prior to welding!
