In the fast-paced world of high-performance cars, staying ahead demands continuous innovation. Ferrari—recognized for its iconic sports cars—has partnered strategically with SK On, a global electric vehicle battery manufacturer, to push the boundaries of cell technology.

The recent memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Ferrari and SK On underscores the importance of technological innovation in the automotive industry. This partnership signifies a commitment to enhance the performance of Ferrari's high-performance vehicles and pave the way for more sustainable and efficient electric and hybrid models.

Since 2019, SK On has been supplying battery cells for some of Ferrari's most powerful models, starting with the SF90 Stradale, a Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and its variants. This collaboration has enabled Ferrari to harness the latest advancements in battery technology, successfully launching models like the SF90 XX Stradale and SF90 XX Spider, which boast a combined power output from the V8 ICE and electric motors of 1030 cv.

By leveraging SK On's expertise in battery technology and Ferrari's legacy of engineering prowess, the two companies aim to explore new frontiers and redefine the future of high-performance driving. Through collaborative research and development efforts, they seek to develop battery solutions that deliver exceptional performance and meet consumers' evolving needs in an increasingly electrified automotive landscape.

“When companies and suppliers come together, collaboration powers common progress,” stated Ferrari's CEO Benedetto Vigna. “We are working together with SK On to explore new frontiers and fuel the energy of shared ideas.”

Implications for the automotive industry

Beyond technological advancements, this collaboration has significant implications for the broader automotive industry. Ferrari's strategic partnership with SK On highlights the importance of secure and reliable supply chain relationships in driving innovation. As the automotive industry undergoes a rapid transformation towards electrification, securing access to cutting-edge technologies and components is paramount for manufacturers seeking to maintain their competitive edge.

Furthermore, by embracing collaboration and technological innovation, Ferrari establishes a standard for other high-performance car manufacturers, urging them to enhance their offerings and meet changing consumer demands. As an illustration, Lamborghini has also ventured into sustainability by licensing MIT's cobalt-free battery technology for electric vehicles.

Ferrari's sustainability and electrification goals

Ferrari has set ambitious goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. While maintaining its dedication to internal combustion engines, the company is actively transitioning towards electrification. By 2026, Ferrari plans for around 60 percent of its vehicle lineup to comprise fully electric and hybrid models. In line with this commitment, a new facility is being constructed in Maranello, Italy. This purpose-built structure will primarily focus on manufacturing electric motors, battery packs, and power inverters.

During the third-quarter earnings call, the company confirmed it is on track to launch its first fully electric vehicle in the last quarter of 2025. “Ferrari's first fully electric model project is going as planned, but for some processes, we are even ahead of schedule," Vigna told reporters.

As electric and hybrid vehicles become increasingly dominant, the need for advanced battery solutions will only grow. By working together, Ferrari and SK On are well-positioned to drive meaningful change in the automotive industry, shaping the future of high-performance driving for years to come. As the automotive landscape continues evolving, one thing remains clear: the e-race for innovation is just starting.
