According to several reputable sources, the average price for a new personal vehicle (car, pickup, or SUV) in the US is just over $40,000. Interestingly at the same time as the average price of a new car has been increasing, the costs associated with making electric vehicles (primarily the lithium-ion batteries) have been steadily decreasing. In fact, the nine least expensive EVs in the US all cost less than $45,500, and that’s before any federal, state, and local EV incentives, which could total between $7,500 and $10,000.

The thing is, unlike the “cheap” EVs of a decade ago, each of these new 2021 models has all of the amenities of any modern vehicle while also providing the kind of range between recharging that makes them perfectly practical modes of transportation. With rapidly growing public charging networks and DC fast charging capability, these EVs can also be used to long distance travel.
